We gave away about 2,000 books this year. The kids books we gave away went to the East Denver FISH foodbank, which delivered them (along with food) to households with children. We set up a library at the St. Francis Apartments at Cathedral Square. It’s an apartment house for people fresh off the street. It’s been interesting what the residents read: Dictionaries are popular, as are cookbooks. One of our friends there loves mysteries and thrillers, and another asked for books by Carl Jung. Current requests are for books by Dean Koontz, Star Trek books, and books on sociology, anthropology and Sumerians. There are also some children living there, so we make sure they have something to read (or to be read to them) as well. Goodwill got a lot of books from us, too. For a place that sells books, we get a lot of satisfaction of just giving them away. Book stores should be part of the fabric of a community, we think, and we do our best to fulfill that responsibility. You may be able to get most anything from Amazon, but you won’t get that.
