Frauds, fakes and forgeries aren’t that common to those of us at Printed Page, although they’re not absent from the used and antiquarian book business. When we have a fake, we celebrate it. That’s why we had a framed photo of Humphrey Bogart hanging in the store, boldly autographed in felt tip pen. Bogart died in 1957, only three years before the felt tip pen he used to sign the photo was invented. The other day, a customer asked to buy the picture, so we sold it to him, carefully checking to see if the money he gave us was counterfeit. We’re going to replace the photo with a Nintendo game autographed by Cleopatra.
